Mechanical Testing

To determine the characteristics and suitability of a material or component for a given application, a series of mechanical tests are carried out to measure certain properties - elasticity, tensile strength, elongation, hardness, fracture toughness, impact resistance, stress rupture and fatigue amongst others.

KW Designed Solutions has developed and engineered Pressure Vessels with highly advanced Mechanical Testing devices incorporated into their design that allow these tests to be carried out at high temperature, high pressure and within an aggressive media.

Pressure Vessels with Mechanical Testing mechanisms provide customers the ability to carry out mechanical testing on components in environments that replicate the actual service conditions of applications in sectors including oil and gas, aerospace and nuclear.

The performance of materials and joints in aggressive environments can be tested; measuring the effect of the conditions on a part's mechanical properties, determining flaw tolerances and providing accelerated aging data for a material without the need for a separate Mechanical Testing Machine.

  • Fatigue crack growth testing (ASTM E647) at 1000 bar between -50°C and +100°C
  • Tensile and fracture testing at pressures up to 1000 bar, at temperatures between -50°C and +100°C
  • Exposure to temperatures up to 300°C, at pressures up to 1700 bar
  • ASTM G129 Slow Strain Rate Testing (SSRT)
  • ASTM G38, G49, G64 & G139 Stress-Corrosion Testing
  • Full-scale H2S sour service fatigue testing resistance to HISC (Hydrogen Induced Stress Cracking) and SSC (Sulphide Stress Cracking)

Applications and Customer Uses

Our mechanical testing devices are incorporated into Pressure Vessels and Autoclaves for customers providing testing services in Materials Research Centres.  Our customers conduct testing to determine safe operating limits for materials, to replicate extreme site conditions in laboratory conditions, perform accelerated age testing and validate materials and joining techniques for aggressive environments.
